I hate the Yankees but this guy was a phenom for his day
life:
On this day in 1920, the New York Yankees purchased Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for $125,000.
In this gallery, LIFE.com presents rare and unpublished photos from the day of his final public appearance at Yankee Stadium; two months before his death of cancer on August 16, 1948. Morse — 93 years old, and as sharp as ever — recently spoke with LIFE and recalled what it was like to photograph one of the 20th century’s greatest athletes as the Babe said his final, poignant goodbye.
“I took the pictures, and headed down to the LIFE offices with the film,” Morse says. “But when I got there, Ed Thompson, the managing editor, says, ‘Sorry, Ralph. We couldn’t wait for you. We closed the page.’ Well, that was that. The issue was closed, and I lost the page I was shooting for. They put some sort of Hollywood s—- or something in there instead. I don’t remember. But it was all right. That sort of thing happened all the time. And the pictures I got were good, even if the magazine never used them.”
Well hello, Tumblr….my it’s been so long since I’ve brushed the dust off this blog.
I have intensive classes that keep me bogged down like crazy (hw, grammar and major vocal memorizing) This country isn’t providing me any comforts that San Diego or Singapore would either….hygienic and/or healthy food options. Yea yea I know what all of you who have been to Taiwan would say….the food’s the best! Aside from pineapple pastries and dim sum? I’m not touching anything else. On the streets, I’ll only touch the fresh fruits I buy from the vendors….basic meals I just go to the 7 eleven to buy my minimum sustenance (curry rice, beef burritos, water, etc) What? The local “Vons” is like 5 miles away, I’m too busy with school and the gym. But a few things that do keep me sane:
1) Taiwan’s extremely cheap….it’s a college student’s wet dream in regards to budgeting.
2) I pay USD 30 for a year of gym membership at school (it’s the same size as RIMAC at UCSD)
3) I pay USD 2700 for an entire year for a single at my dorm inclusive of water, internet) I will spend an estimated USD 200 a year on electricity.
4) I’m playing in Taiwan’s premier rugby league and I’m a starter, even though we’re amateur status, I’m still proud of our achievements so far.
5) Health care is bloody cheap…so cheap I don’t need insurance…I’m not exaggerating either.
6) Because of how cheap it is I can set money aside for future consumption.
I guess in a way….I do like/hate Taipei….it really depends on how my mood is.
I’m only human…I’m not borderline psychotic….but there’s an immense surge of adrenaline inside me wanting to cause immense pain.
Only a cigarette keeps me sane…
A very big kisses-filled Birthday wish to my awesome and beautiful girlfriend Sharalyn Dell!!
I love you so much and I can’t wait until you’re here with me in Singapore!
<3!!!!
If you miss me, you can’t text, you can’t email, you can’t post it on my Facebook wall. If you really miss me, you come and see me.
Really wish I could apply this quote with ease in regards to to a long distance relationship. And by long distance I mean 8000miles apart. Wish I could teleport so I can see my Shar Pear as much as I want, when I want. But what’s stopping me, I wonder?
Let me put it this way…….
“You know how much insurance on a Ferrari costs, motherfucker?”
